Meet the Boost Team – Sam

Want to know more about the wonderful humans who work at Boost? Of course you do! Each week a member of the Boost team will be writing a blog to introduce themselves and their role. We hope that you enjoy getting to know us better!

This week’s blog is by Sam

I’m Sam, Boost’s co-founder and Managing Director. The idea for the Boost Breast Form stemmed from my Mum’s experience of wearing a prosthesis. She found that the traditional products were hot, heavy and sweaty so she decided not to wear them. I looked around for something that would suit her better, but most of the products were very similar! She didn’t like any of them. Eventually, I teamed up with a former colleague and we decided to do more research into the problem, and the idea for the Boost Breast Form came to life!

I am really proud of Boost’s journey from a side-hustle to a business that has customers around the world. I didn’t start my career thinking that I was going to be an entrepreneur, so it’s been a big learning curve for me! Originally, I worked in education and then in museums. While this sounds like a far cry from running a business, it’s always surprised me how many skills I’ve built up over the years have helped me to run Boost.

I live in the small Cornish village that I grew up in and I feel so lucky that I have been able to base our business there. Both Chris Hawken (Boost’s Design Director) and I have strong links to Cornwall and we’re committed to growing a sustainable business here. We have an ambition to grow in our community, building our Boost team to create new jobs locally. The Boost team really does feel like a family, but it is literally the case for me!  My mum (who is now 12 years all-clear from her breast cancer) often helps around Boost HQ, and my dad regularly drops our Boost parcels off at the Post Office! Even my son, Charlie (who is 13 years old) lends a hand occasionally.

I’ve learnt so much from running Boost, and it’s part of my mission to share these experiences with others. Running a small business is hard, there are lots of everyday pressures, things to think about, and competing priorities to juggle. Recently, I’ve been added to the Highly Commended list of 100 Female Entrepreneurs by Natwest and The Telegraph, which has helped me to meet other inspirational women and make some amazing new contacts. It feels a bit odd on one hand because I don’t often think of myself as an entrepreneur, but it has also been a wonderful opportunity to share and connect.

Running a business can feel difficult at times. But do you know what? The  feedback we get from our Boost community makes it all completely worth it. I wasn’t expecting my life to turn out this way (I guess I quite liked working in museums) but I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Thanks so much to our team, community and friends and family,

Sam
